Procell™ Microchanneling is a noninvasive procedure designed to stimulate your body’s own natural ability to generate collagen, elastin, and other building blocks of healthy skin. Microchanneling vs. Microneedling — what's the difference?
Both create tiny channels in the skin to trigger collagen production. The difference is how, and what it costs you in downtime.
Microneedling uses a pen that moves across the skin in a scraping motion. It's effective and it's the more familiar name, but you'll be red and sensitive for three to five days afterward.
Microchanneling uses the Procell MD device, which stamps straight down instead of dragging. The channels come out more uniform, there's less trauma to the surface, and downtime drops to about a day. Procell also delivers human growth factors through those channels — that's the part microneedling doesn't do, and it's what makes this our first choice for acne scarring.
If you've been told you need microneedling for scarring, this is usually the better version of that. If you want the lower-cost option and can plan around a few days of redness, microneedling still works.
Does Microchanneling hurt?
Less than microneedling, and less than most people expect. We apply a topical numbing cream before we start, and the Procell device stamps straight down rather than dragging across the skin, which is the part that makes microneedling uncomfortable. Most clients describe it as a prickly, vibrating feeling rather than pain.
The forehead and along the jaw are where people notice it most — anywhere the bone sits close to the surface. If anything feels sharp, say so and we'll adjust the depth or add more numbing. You don't have to tough it out.
Afterward your skin will feel tight and look pink, like a mild sunburn. That's usually gone within a day.
How many treatments will I need?
Depends on what we're treating. For general skin health, three is a good starting series. For acne scarring, laxity, or deeper texture, six or more is realistic. We space them a few weeks apart. We won't promise you a number up front — we'll tell you what we're seeing as we go.
What skin conditions will Microchanneling help with?
Microchanneling treatments can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, stretch marks, and rosacea.
Can I do Microchanneling before a wedding or event?
Not close to it. You'll be pink for about a day and possibly a little rough-textured for a few days after. If you want microchanneling before something important, finish your series at least two weeks out. For something in the next week, Nano Infusion or a Hydrafacial is the better call.
My skin is irritated, can I use a moisturizer?
It is normal for treatments to result in some skin irritation, especially for clients with more sensitive skin. Always wait a minimum of 90 minutes before putting anything else on the skin. During this time it is normal for the skin to remain pink or light red. After the 90 minutes you can apply additional moisturizer or other products. Keep in mind however, that as your skin may be more sensitive than usual for several days after the treatment, especially strong topicals should be avoided until the skin returns to normal.
How long before I can expect to see results?
Though neocollagenesis (the production of new collagen) can take several weeks, it is not abnormal to notice an improvement in the quality and appearance of your skin within the first 24 hours. After 2-3 treatments a thicker more robust, collagen filled cellular matrix will produce more consistent and noticeable improvement. And 6 or more treatments may be recommended for scarring, laxity and wrinkles.
Are there any contraindications?
If you have any underlying condition that significantly impairs your immune system, it is a good idea to avoid microchanneling. Examples include but are not limited to active radiation or chemotherapy, uncontrolled diabetes, chronic inflammatory skin disease, Accutane in the past 2 years, hemophilia or similar bleeding disorder. Also anyone with stainless steel allergies should not do this treatment. We also discourage treatments for those who are pregnant or nursing.
Who can do Microchanneling?
As Procell microchanneling treatments are minimally invasive, they are also safe for all skin types. Whether you are fair-skinned or dark, and even if you experience chronic breakouts, properly conducted microchanneling treatments will not result in hyperpigmentation, keloid scars, or other lasting negative side effects.
What's in the serum?
Procell's Microchannel Delivery Serum contains bone marrow-derived growth factors in a hyaluronic acid suspension. Both of these elements are naturally-occurring in the human body. There are no human, animal, or plant cells, DNA, blood, or any other foreign substances. The product has been used safely and effectively for over a decade.
Do I have to use the solution/aftercare serums?
Microchanneling stimulates the body to release peptides, cytokines and growth factors that induce collagen production. As you get older, the stem cells that produce these vital proteins lose efficacy and decline in population, so microchanneling alone becomes less and less effective. Because of premature aging, the Microchannel Delivery Serum and the post care Cellular Renewal Serum and Healing Accelerator Serum become more vital to improvement. Use of the Procell aftercare products ensure the skin continuously receives potent, robust, pristine peptides, cytokines and growth factors even in between treatments. The serums aren't optional in the sense that they're what makes the treatment work. The growth factors are the active part — the microchannels are just how we get them in. We'll send you home with the aftercare serums and tell you exactly when to use them.
